they had the idea at one point

Have any drivers spoken out in favor/against closed cockpits lately? Are they allowed to publicly express their opinion on safety changes?

I wouldn’t know.
I do know that some drivers are looking to improve the safety, I’m waiting to see how they react to this news.

The way I understand it, the things they’re testing now have (a) been in the works for awhile, and (b) aren’t true closed cockpits. One option is basically a big roll hoop over the driver (seen in the Mercedes graphic at the Motorsport link). The other is something they’re calling “blades” that goes further forward of the car but is out of view of the driver.

I thought they ruled this out since the extraction times were deemed too long in the case of a serious accident on the track?

This is a new Road and Track post. I guess it’s back.

Ah, I didn’t read all of the post before posting. The blade sounds interesting. If they do implement it then I look forward to seeing how the teams use it for aero benefits if there are any to be seen from it.

I’m glad they’re doing it, but...
I just said in reply to For Sweden’s great post earlier that F1 and Indycar should work together to develop solutions, because there are more questions than answers as to the feasibility of closed cockpits. I find it hard to believe that an adequately designed structure could be designed, produced, and tested in a month, during the racing season.

A quick botched together ‘knee jerk’ solution is good for now. this has been on the cards for a while and should have been implemented sooner, and to be honest that makes me think that teams might have some preliminary research on closed cockpits already

“A quick botched together ‘knee jerk’ solution is good for now. “
It is until it isn’t. The testing needs to begin, certainly, but implementing something half assed is not acceptable. These things could turn existing cars into tombs if they don’t work.

Good. Hopefully indy follows suit

Closed cockpits have been around in motorsports for years. Unlimited hydroplanes, F1 Powerboat and Top Fuel Hydroplane have used closed cockpits for years. There is plenty of prior knowledge around for F1/IndyCar to work from for developing closed cockpits on their cars.

I hadn’t even thought of that, thanks for bringing it up.

It was mostly an excuse to post pictures/video of cool boats.
